Moons of Mars

Written by marsplanet.co.uk

Mars has two small natural satellites called Phobos and Deimos. Their orbits are very close to the planet. Two are believed to be captured asteroids, sucked into the planets gravity.

Both satellites were discovered by Asaph Hall in 1877.

Moons of MarsTheir names were placed in honour of the characters in Greek mythology that were associated with Ares (Mars in Roman mythology). Both the satellites move from west to east Phobos is the larger of the two.

Trojan asteroids

Mars has, like Jupiter, some Trojan asteroids at the Lagrange points L4 and L5. Three asteroids are officially recognized by the International Astronomical Union Minor Planet Center and are: 5261 "Eureka", 101429 and 121514.

It is worth mentioning that one of these asteroids was discovered from the Astronomical Observatory of La Sagra in Granada, Spain, in 2007.
